Morgan John MacCarthy, 32nd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, who was mentioned in Sir John French's first despatches, served with distinction through the South African War. He was at the defence of Ladysmith, and in the operations in Natal and in the Transvaal, and was mentioned in despatches in September, 1901. He received the Queen's Medal with four clasps.
