Information: Cantain John Percy Whelan, 1st Battalion the Royal Irish Rifles, who was killed in action on the 11th December, 1914, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Whelan, Barna, Osbourne Park, Belfast. He was born in May, 1879. After serving in the Militia he was gazetted Second Lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery in August, 1902, and obtained his promotion as Lieutenant the following year. Transferring to the Royal Irish Rifles in 1905, he became Captain in the year 1910. From that date till November, 1912, Captain Whelan was employed as adjutant in the Territorial Force. On the outbreak of the war he became attached to the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment.
