Information: Major William Stopford Sarsfield, 2nd Batt. Connaught Rangers, who died on the 20th September, 1914, of wounds received in the battle of the Aisne when, owing to the capture and imprisonment of Colonel Abercrombie, he was in temporary command of the regiment. Major Sarsfield was the third son of the late Mr. D.R.P. Sarsfield, of Doughcloyne, Co. Cork. He joined the 1st Battalion of the Connaught Rangers in September, 1888, and served all through the South African War, where he took part in the relief of Ladysmith and the actions at Colenso, Spion Kop, Vaal Kranz and Tugela Heights. He was appointed Assistant Press Censor in South Africa and Deputy Assistant Adjutant-General. He received the Queen's Medal with three clasps and the King's Medal with two clasps.
