Information: Lieutenant Valentine D. French, 5th Battalion Shropshire Light Infantry, died on June 16th of wounds received in action in France on the previous day. He was the third son of the Hon. John French, Resident Magistrate, Queenstown. He had served previously in the 5th Munster Fusiliers, but went to Malay, where he was for seven years manager of the Shelford Rubber Estates. On the outbreak of war he returned home and joined the Shropshire Light Infantry, and left with his regiment for the front on the 20th May. Only a short time previously his cousins, Lord de Freyne and the Hon. John French were killed in the same action.
