Information: Second Lieutenant Charles Ernest Cooke, 1st Batt. Royal Irish Fusiliers, who was killed in action at Ypres on May 26th, was the second surviving son of Mr. Alexander Cooke, of Notting Hill, Belfast. He joined the Ulster Volunteer Force in May last on his return from a trip round the world, and volunteered for service at the front the day after war was declared. He went to the front in the end of September, was wounded in November, and after six weeks in hospital returned to the front. Lieutenant Cooke was mentioned in despatches by Sir John French in February last for gallantry in the field.
