Information: Captain James Anson Otho Brooke V.C., 2nd Batt. Gordon Highlanders, who has been killed in action, was a son of Captain and Mrs. Harry Brooke, Fairley, Aberdeenshire, and grandson of Sir Arthur Brinsley Brooke, Bart., M.P., of Colebrooke, Co. Fermanagh, where the Brooke family have lived since 1658. Captain Brooke was mentioned in despatches and awarded the Victoria Cross for his coolness and gallantry in reforming the line and taking a most important trench at a critical moment, thus saving the situation, but the gallant Captain was shortly afterwards killed.
