Information: Second LieutenantJohnston Shaw Kirker Hunter, Special Reserve of Officers, Royal Field Artillery, who was killed in action on June 30th, 1916, was the elder son of Mr. R. J. Hunter, B.L., of Dromore, Co. Down, and 142 Royal Avenue, Belfast. He was educated at the Academical Institution, Banbridge, where he was a very distinguished pupil, and in 1911 was appointed to the Irish Land Commission. In 1913 he was appointed, after examination, to the Chinese Imperial Customs Service and was stationed at Shanghai, but the climate not agreeing with him he returned home in 1914, and when war was declared was amongst the first to offer his services. In August, 1914, he joined the North Irish Horse, received his commission in the Special Reserve of Officers in October, 1915, and went to the front in February last. He was one of the officers selected for special training as an artillery observation officer in the R.F.C., and was about to proceed when he was ordered to return to his battery to take part in the offensive, and fell in action on June 30th.
