Information: Second Lieutenant John Ernest Motherwell, Royal Irish Rifles, attached North Lancs. Regiment, who was killed in action on Oct. 21st, 1916, was the second son of Mr. David Motherwell, 135 University Street, Belfast, the manager of the well known firm of David Allen and Sons, Ltd., Belfast, of which he was assistant manager when war broke out. He enlisted in the Highland Light Infantry in September, 1914, and rose to be Sergeant. He went to France in November, 1914, and was invalided home in the following March with pneumonia. He was afterwards given a commission in the Royal Irish Rifles, and went to France in July, 1916, attached to the North Lancs. Regiment.
