He was gazetted to the 53rd Sikhs, now serving in Egypt, and saw some active service on the North-West Indian frontier. On the outbreak of war in August last he joined the first Indian Expeditionary Force and was attached to the 39th Gharwal Rifles, a regiment which has won many distinctions since it landed in France in October last. Major Woods was invalided home, suffering from influenza a few months ago, but returned to the front and fell in the fierce fighting on May 9th.
