Major James Woods
Regiment: Indian Medical Service
39th Gharwal Rifles
Killed in action:
Major James Woods, Indian Medical Service, was the youngest son of the late Mr. William Woods, Waring Street, Belfast. He was gazetted to the 53rd Sikhs, now serving in Egypt, and saw some active service on the North-West Indian frontier. On the outbreak of war in August last he joined the first Indian Expeditionary Force and was attached to the 39th Gharwal Rifles, a regiment which has won many distinctions since it landed in France in October last. Major Woods was invalided home, suffering from influenza a few months ago, but returned to the front and fell in the fierce fighting on May 9th.
