Information: Surgeon James Barrett, R.N., who was drowned while on active service off the Orkneys on December 14th, 1914, was the eldest son of the late Mr. Denis Barrett, Tralee, He was educated at Clongowes College and afterwards at University College, Dublin, taking out his degrees at an exceptionally young age. He took his medical degree in the Royal University of Ireland and entered the Navy about seven years ago. When the war broke out he was surgeon in charge of the Royal Marine Barracks at Plymouth and applied to be sent to a ship on active service. He was surgeon on the “Imperieuse” at the time of his death.
