Information: Captain Basil Maclear, 2nd Royal Dublin Fusiliers, has been killed in action in France. The news has been received with great regret in Ireland, where he was well known as the famous Irish International Rugby footballer. He represented Ireland on a number of occasions in the international series and distinguished himself by his play, his fine physique and pace making him a conspicuous figure. He learned his football at Bedford Grammar School and figured in many military teams, both in England and South Africa, where he was with the Dublin Fusiliers during the South African War. Capt. Maclear's brother, Lt. Col. Percy Maclear, formerly of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers, was killed last August in The Cameroons while in command of a battalion of the Nigeria Regiment. The deceased officers were two of the five sons of Mrs. Maclear, Bedford, and the three remaining sons are also in service. They are nephews of Mrs. Moore, Flowerfield, Portstewart.
