Information: Captain Valentine Knox Gilliland, attached 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, aged 25, killed in action on May 8th, was the youngest surviving son of the late G. K. Gilliland, D.L., of Brook Hall, Londonderry. At the outbreak of the war Captain Gilliland was posted to the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, stationed at Dublin, and proceeded to the front on January 18, having been promoted Captain two days previously from the rank of Second Lieutenant.
