Information: Captain D. Nelson, Royal Field Artillery, is yet another Irishman who has been awarded the Victoria Cross. Captain Nelson landed in France on August 16th, 1914, was slightly wounded at the battle of Mons on August 24th, whilst doing the work of a section officer and another officer, both of whom had been wounded. At Nery, on September 1st, he brought, with the assistance of a gunner, the first gun into action in the “L” Battery exploit, and continued to serve it until the enemy's eight guns, 600 yards away, were silenced. He was wounded slightly in the leg and seriously in the right lung and ribs. He was taken prisoner on September 2nd, but escaped on the 5th and reached the French Hospital at Dinan on the 9th. He was granted convalescent leave after an operation, and returning home was gazetted Captain Instructor in Gunnery at Shoeburyness on March 1st, 1915, which post he at present holds.
