Information: Captain J.H.A. Ryan, 1st Batt. King's Liverpool Regiment, was the younger son of Dr. and Mrs. Ryan, of Roade. Northamptonshire, and a nephew of Mr. H. J. Ryan, of Scarteen, Knocklong. Co. Limerick, whose son Lieut. T.J. Ryan, 16th Lancers, is now a prisoner of war in Germany. Captain Ryan was educated at Downside School and Sandhurst. He joined the King'sLiverpool Regiment in 1912 and went to France with the Expeditionary Force in August, 1914, serving at Mons, Marne, the Aisne, and Ypres. He was mentioned in despatches and was one of the earliest recipients of the Military Cross. After the first battle of Ypres he was the only unwounded officer in his battalion who went out with the Expeditionary Force in August, 1914. Capt. Ryan was a keen cricket and football player. and had played for Sandhurst and also played cricket for Northamptonshire and the Aldershot Command. He also won the Officers' Half-mile at the Army Athletic Meeting in 1913.
