Information: Second Lieutenant R. W. McGonigal, Royal Garrison Artillery, elder son of the late Mr. David McGonigal, one of the best known solicitors in Belfast, and Mrs. McGonigal, The Laurels, Strandtown, has been awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry while serving on the Western front, when he lifted a live bomb which had been thrown into a British trench by the enemy and hurled it over the parapet, at imminent risk of being killed by the explosion. Lieut. McGonigal was educated at Coleraine Academical Institution, the Belfast Academical Institution, and Trinity College, Dublin.
