Information: Major George Julian Ryan D.S.O., 2nd Batt. Royal Munster Fusiliers, was killed on January 23rd, 1915 in France by a sniper as he was returning from an inspection of the trenches. Major Ryan was born in 1878, and was a son of the late Lieut. Col. G. Ryan, Army Medical Department, and Mrs. Ryan, Ashby Cottage, Ryde, I,W. In 1897 he joined the 1st Batt. R.M.F. Major Ryan had seen much service abroad, and was all through the South African War, for his services in which he received the Queen's Medal with five clasps and the D.S.O. He served seven years in Egypt, and for his services in the Soudan in 1905 he was again mentioned in despatches and received the Egyptian Medal and clasps, and in the present war was once more mentioned in despatches.
