Information: Lieutenant Colonel G. Downing, 7th Service Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers, The commander, who has been mentioned in despatches for his services in the Dardanelles, is a son of Dr. Samuel Downing, formerly Professor of Engineering in Trinity College, Dublin, and a brother of Lieutenant-Colonel H. J. Downing, D.S.O., 8th Batt. Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. Lieut. Col. G. Downing was in the Reserve of Officers when the war began, and was appointed to the command of the 7th Dublins on the formation of the battalion in August, 1914. He was Adjutant of the 4th (Royal City of Dublin Militia) Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers during its services in the South African War (Queen's Medal with three clasps).
