Information: Captain Walter Mellor, 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Regiment, He was born in 1878 and entered the Army in 1899, obtaining a commission in the Lancashire Fusiliers through the Militia. He obtained his Captaincy in 1905 and was transferred to the Royal Irish Regiment three years later. He served in the South African War and took part in the operations in the Transvaal in Natal and in the Orange River Colony, later acting as railway officer in the Transvaal from January, 1901, to May, 1902. He received the Queen's Medal with four clasps and the King's Medal with two clasps.
