Information: Lieutenant Cecil Crampton Holmes, 1st Lincolnshire Regiment, son of Captain H. W. Holmes, late North Staffordshire Regiment, of Rockwood, Galway. He entered the army October, 1907, and was promoted 1st Lieutenant in November, 1911. He took part in the action in Fourmies, near Mons, on August 24th, when he was wounded. He was maxim gun officer on that occasion, and displayed great bravery and coolness under fire, causing considerable loss to the enemy, and putting two of their guns out of action. While lying wounded he continued to direct and encourage his men, and his services were mentioned in Sir John French's despatches.
