Information: Brigadier General Spring R. Rice, C.B.R.E., entered the service in 1877, and after a most distinguished career was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel in 1903 and full Colonel in 1908. He served in the South African War, and took part in the operations in Natal, including the action at Lombard's Kop, and as Chief Royal Engineer greatly distinguished himself in the defence of Ladysmith. He was responsible for perfecting the blockhouse system, which played such an important part in the Boer War. He was mentioned twice in despatches, and obtained the Queen's Medal with three clasps and the King's Medal with two clasps. He held the position of Chief Engineer at Aldershot, and is now serving with the Headquarters 1st Army. He has been mentioned in Sir John French's despatches.
