Information: Major William Griffith Phibbs, Royal Irish Fusiliers, who died of acute pneumonia contracted in the trenches. He was the only son of the late Lieut. Col. George Griffith Phibbs, of Knockbrack, Co. Sligo. Entered the service in 1892, was gazetted Captain in 1900, and obtained his majority in August, 1902. Served with the Nile Expedition in 1899, receiving Egyptian Medal with clasps; served in the South African War, taking part in the operations in Natal, including the actions at Talana and Lombard's Kop, also in the Orange River Colony in 1900, and in the Transvaal the same year; again in the Orange River Colony in 1901, and the operations on the Zulu frontier in the same year. Served as adjutant with the Second Batt. Royal Irish Fusiliers from May, 1901-2. Was mentioned in despatches, receiving Queen's Medal with four clasps and King's Medal with two clasps.
