Information: Captain Charles Lionel Master, 2nd Battallion Royal Irish Rifles. Killed in action, He was son of the late Mr. William Edgar Master, and was born in Ceylon on 24th March, 1881. He was educated at Bradfield, and entered the Royal Irish Rifles as second Lieutenant from the Militia in January, 1901, and became Lieutenant four years later, he obtained Adjutancy of his Regiment in January, 1901, and was promoted Captain in June of the same year. He saw service in South Africa during the war of 1901-2 in the Orange River Colony, and received the Queen's Medal with five clasps. On the outbreak of the present war he accompanied his Regiment to the front, where it was continuously engaged and suffered severely. Captain Master was killed by shrapnel while leading his Company in the attack on La Couture on the 12th October, 1914. He was mentioned in Sir John French's despatches of October 8th.
