Information: Captain C.J. Newport, 1st Royal Irish Rifles, has been mentioned in despatches for conspicuous gallantry in the battle of May 9th last in the advance trenches, when, being the senior surviving officer of his regiment, he resisted all efforts of the enemy to dislodge him, though heavily pressed and attacked on both flanks, until his command was reduced to twenty or thirty men whom he managed to withdraw safely, being himself dangerously wounded. Captain Newport is the eldest son of Mrs. Edith Newport, Ballygallon, Inistioge, Co. Kilkenny.
