Information: Major Godfrey M. Wheeler V.C., was killed in action at Shaiba, Mesopotamia, on 13th April, 1915, while serving with the Indian Expeditionary Force, for his conspicuous gallantry, in which action the Victoria Cross was conferred upon him. On the preceding day Major Wheeler had asked permission to take out his squadron and attempt to capture the enemy's flag, which was the centre point who were firing on our pickets. On the following day he led his squadron to the attack on the “North Mound”, and was killed on the Mound, having ridden far ahead of his men, straight for the enemy's standards. He was the youngest and last surviving son of the late Lieutenant-General George Wheeler, Bengal Staff Corps, and Mrs. Wheeler, who was the eldest daughter of Mr. John Massy, Kingswell House, Tipperary.
