Information: Major GeneraI Robert Wanless O'Gowan, formerly lived at Clonard, Dundrum, was first gazetted to the 2nd Battalion of the Scottish Rifles, and went through the South African War, where he was seriously wounded at the battle of Spion Kop. Later he was given command of the East Lancs., and on retiring from that was appointed Assistant Quartermaster General at the War Office. On the outbreak of the war he was promoted to Brigadier-General and sent to the front. He directed operations at the taking of Hill 60, and soon after was made Major-General and given a C.B. He has also received the Russian Order of St. Vladimir, 4th class.
