Information: Sub-Lieutenant Herbert Rutter Simms, was 24 years of age, and the son of Alderman and Mrs. D.R. Simms, of Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, and a nephew of Mrs. R. H. Lamb, of Wheatfield, Portadown. When quite a boy he took great delight and interest in attempting to fly, and made a flying machine of his own, and took short flights in his father's garden. As soon as possible he entered into the flying profession. He was appointed an instructor under the Greek Government, but shortly after the outbreak of war obtained his release and joined the Flying Corps of the British Navy. Being attached to the British section in Flanders he became very useful and shot down a hostile aeroplane on February 29th, 1916. After a period in hospital and a short visit home he again returned to Flanders and met his death, falling into the sea off Dunkirk.
