Information: Sub-Lieutenant Samuel Thomas Smiley, H.M.S. Arabic, who was killed when H.M.S. Arabic was torpedoed in the North Sea, was the third son of Captain and Mrs. Smiley, 18 Chichester Avenue, Belfast. Lieutenant Smiley was in the Lord Line (Messrs. Thomas Dixon and Sons), Belfast, for about eighteen years and resigned his position as chief officer of the Lord Dufferin in May, 1915, in order to offer his services to the Navy. After a period of training in Devonport he was appointed navigating lieutenant on H.M.S. Arabic at the beginning of December.
