Information: Captain William D. Holmes D.S.O., Canadian Light Infantry, who fell in action in the advance about the beginning of July, was a son of Mr. William Cuthbert Holmes, a retired Indian judge, and grandson of the late Dr. Charles Holmes, Dublin. On the outbreak of the war Captain Holmes was in Canada. He received his commission in the First Contingent from Canada, and saw a great deal of service in France, where he won the D.S.O. last year for conspicuous gallantry near Messines, having previously been mentioned for gallantry at Festurbet. Captain Holmes was a cousin of Mr. George McCurdy, Meenahoney, Castlefinn.
