Information: Captain John Forrest Ruttledge, 2nd Batt. Prince of Wales' Own West Yorkshire Regiment, was the eldest son of Lieutenant-Colonel A. Ruttledge, of the Woodlands, Castleconnell. He was gazetted on the 24th February, 1914, to his father's old regiment, and had seen much service in France. He was awarded the Military Cross for great coolness and gallantry near Neuve Chapelle on December 19th, 1914, for rescuing under very heavy fire in daylight men lying in the open on “no man's land”. He was killed in action on July 1st, 1916, whilst leading his men with great gallantry right up to the enemy's trench. His bravery and firm leading of his Company under heavy shell fire was particularly noted by his Colonel.
