Information: Captain James Samuel Davidson, Royal Irish Rifles, who has been killed in action, was the only surviving son of Mr. Samuel Cleland Davidson, Seacourt, Bangor, Co., Down, founder and managing director of the Sirocco Engineering Works, Belfast, of which Capt. Davidson was prior to the outbreak of the war a director and general manager. He was amongst the first to answer his country's call and received his commission in the County Down Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, and was quickly promoted Captain. Captain B. Spender, General Staff Headquarters, in writing to Mr. Davidson on the death of his son states: “I am told your son fell after gallantry which deserved the Victoria Cross. Though badly wounded he had insisted in carrying on, and was killed when his men had at last persuaded him to consent to letting them carry him back.”
