Information: Second Lieutenant James Lyle Hay, killed in action on the 3rd July, was the only son of Mr. W. L. Hay, Clonbrock and Grange, Co. Galway. He was educated at the Grammar School, Galway, from which he passed into the college as a student of engineering. He was in his second year when the war broke out and was among the first to volunteer for the new army. He received a commission in the 15th Batt. Northumberland Fusiliers, but was subsequently transferred to the 12th, and sent to France in October last. Since then he has been in active service, with the exception of a few days' leave. In the words of the Captain of his company: “He met his death gloriously, leading his platoon in an attack on a wood which was finally captured”.
