Information: Capt. John Foley, Tyneside Irish Brigade, who was killed in action during the advance on July 1st, 1916, was the eldest son of David J. Foley, Newtown, Ballyhea, Charleville. At the outbreak of the war he was a teacher under the London County Council, but at once offered his services, and in January, 1915, he obtained a commission in the 2nd Batt. Tyneside Irish Brigade and soon afterwards was promoted Captain. He went to the front early in 1916 and fell whilst gallantly leading his men, though severely wounded at the time.
