Information: Major Thos. Joyce Atkinson, Royal Irish fusiliers, formerly reported “missing, believed killed”, now officially reported killed in action on July 1st, was the only surviving son of Worsley Richard Atkinson, Eden Villa, Portadown. He was educated at Scarborough, Rathmines, and Trinity College, Dublin, of which he was M.A. and L.L.B.; called to the Irish Bar in 1901, admitted a solicitor in 1906, when he became a member of the firm of Carleton, Atkinson and Sloan, Portadown. He was an enthusiastic member of the Ulster Volunteer Force, and on the outbreak of war volunteered for service, was given a commission in the 9th Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers, 36th Ulster Division, subsequently being promoted Major. He had been on active service in France since October, 1915.
