Information: Major J. Carlon Markes, Leinster Regiment, was killed at Longueval on July 19th, 1916, whilst on reconnaissance duty. Major Markes was born in 1879, and was the last surviving son of Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Markes, 95 Gloucester Place, London, W. He entered Sandhurst in 1899, where he won his cricket and Rugby colours, and was selected to play for the Surrey XV. He joined the 20th Lancs. Fusiliers in 1899, and in 1900 he went to South Africa, where he was severely wounded at Itala, was mentioned in despatches, and was awarded two South African medals, 6 clasps. During his service in France he had been twice mentioned in despatches and recommended for the D.S.O.
