Information: Captain Edward Granville Matthey, Lancashire Fusiliers, who was killed in action on the morning of July 1st, 1916, at Beaumont Hamel, was in his 23rd year, and was the son of the late Captain Granville E. Matthey Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, who died at Chakrata, India, in 1897, and of Mrs. Granville Matthey, 92 Queen's Gate, S.W. He was educated at Linton House Preparatory School, and entered Cheltenham College at the age of 13, passing into Sandhurst, September, 1912, and received his commission in the 2nd Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers, on January 22nd, 1913; was promoted Temporary Lieutenant, September 26th, 1914; Lieutenant, December 26th, 1914, and obtained his Captaincy on December 15th, 1915. On July 1st he took part in the offensive in command of “A” Company at Beaumont Hamel, where he fell badly wounded.
