Information: Captain Charles Edward Winter, Rifle Brigade, eldest son of Colonel E. Purdon Winter, of Lisnabin, Killucan, Westmeath, has been awarded the Military Cross for great courage and initiative in collecting and leading a party of fifty men to the second objective, and directing and carrying out the consolidation of the position continuously for fourteen hours. By the time the objective was reached the party had dwindled to five men. Captain Winter was educated at Winchester and Sandhurst, and received his commission in August, 1913. He went to the front in May, 1915
