Information: Major Alfred Bellingham Cairnes, 7th Royal Irish Rifles, was the youngest son of the late Mr. T.P. Cairnes, of Stameen, Drogheda. He was born on December 19th, 1875, and was educated at Eton and Trinity Hall, Cambridge. He served for ten years with the 6th Royal Irish Rifles (the Co. Louth Militia), and retired as a Captain in 1905. Major Cairnes married in 1903 Katharine Jessie, elder daughter of the late Mr. R. H. Winsloe, by whom he leaves a son and daughter, and lived at Lisbote, Drogheda. He was Hon. Secretary of the Louth Hunt, and Master since 1911 of the Little Grange Harriers. On the outbreak of war in 1914 he volunteered for service, and received his commission as a Captain in the 7th (Service) Battalion, R.I.R., on October 26th, and was promoted to Major early in 1915. Major Cairnes fell at Ginchy on September 9th, leading his company.
