Information: Lieutenant Herbert Justin Lemass, Royal Dublin Fusiliers, who was killed in action on October 23rd, 1916, was a son of Dr. R. E. Lemass, I.S.O., who for many years was Senior Secretary of the National Board of Education in Ireland. He was educated at the Catholic University School, Leeson Street, Dublin, and Blackrock College, and subsequently entered Trinity College and joined the Medical School. On the outbreak of the war he joined the O.T.C., being under age for entrance to the service. In August, 1915, he entered Sandhurst as a cadet, and his career there was so successful that he was granted a permanent commission in the Regular Army in December, 1915, and was gazetted to the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. In June, 1916, he was sent to France.
