Information: Lieutenant James O'Callaghan, 13th Cheshire Regiment, who was killed in action on October 21st, 1916, was the son of the late Mrs. O'Callaghan, of Rochfort, Enniscorthy, and a nephew of Mr. James O'Connor, Solicitor-General for Ireland, and Mr. M. J. O'Connor, solicitor, Wexford. Lieutenant O'Callaghan, though only in his 26th year, had a very adventurous career. As a boy of 16 he volunteered and took part in the Zulu campaign in 1906. He subsequently joined the Navy, and whilst serving on H.M.S. Arrogance was congratulated by Prince Louis of Battenberg on being the only man in the Navy wearing the Zulu Rebellion medal. Later he took up an important position in Johannesburg, and when war broke out joined the South African Horse, being afterwards transferred to the 1st Imperial Light Horse. When the campaign was ended he volunteered for service in France.
