Information: Lieutenant William Carlile Hill, Royal Irish Rifles, attached trench mortar battery, has been awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He succeeded in moving his guns to defensive positions under very heavy fire. Later, in spite of heavy fire, he continued to fire a gun himself. He set a splendid example of courage and determination throughout. Lieutenant Hill is a son of Mr. R. C. Hill, 101 Fitzroy Avenue, Belfast. He enlisted in the Black Watch in 1914, and was promoted to a commission in July, 1915, and transferred to the Royal Irish Rifles, whom he joined at the front in July, 1916.
