A keen sportsman and an ardent student, he carried both reputations with him throughout his Cambridge University career, where he was one of the St. John's College rowing, shooting, and football men. After an Honours Degree he returned to Denstone as Master, and was rapidly promoted to be House Master, Sports Master, and Lieutenant, O.T.C.
