Information: Lieutenant William Maunsell Scanlan, 1st Canadian Contingent, was the elder son of the Rev. Dr. Scanlan, Bruce Co., Port Elgin, Ontario, and great grandson of Mr. Michael Scanlan, J.P., High Sheriff of Limerick. Shortly after war broke out he joined the 5th Battalion of the First Canadian Contingent, and was with them in nearly all the principal engagements in which they took such a distinguished part. He was awarded the Military Medal for conspicuous gallantry in a successful attack on a very strong German position when nearly all the officers and non commissioned officers of his battalion were either killed or wounded. He soon afterwards was promoted Lieutenant. He fell mortally wounded in the attack on Vimy Ridge and died the following day. Lieut. Scanlan was a nephew of Dr. Bateman, Inspector of Schools, Dublin.
