Information: Major William H.K. Redmond, M.P. for East Clare, fell in action whilst gallantly leading his men in the Battle of Messines on June 7th, 1917. Major Redmond was the younger brother of Mr. John Redmond, the famous Irish Leader, and was in his fifty-sixth year. “I am far too old to be a soldier”, he wrote when he joined the Irish Brigade, “but I intend to try to do my best for whatever life remains in me to show that Ireland at least is true to her treaties”. Major Redmond was very popular in the House with all political parties, for everyone admired his courage and chivalry, and his last speech in the House on March 7th last, when he made an impassioned plea for an Irish settlement, was listened to with rapt attention. Much sympathy is felt for Mrs. Redmond, who was Miss Eleanor Dalton, daughter of Mr. James Dalton, of Orange, New South Wales.
