Information: Major (Temp. Lieutenant-Colonel) Wigram Clifford D.S.O., second and only surviving son of the late Major-Gen. Richard M. Clifford, was killed in action on June 20th, 1917, aged 41 years. He was educated at Westward House and Sandhurst, and joined the 1st Loyal N. Lancs. He served with that regiment and with the Australian Mounted Infantry in South Africa in 1899-1901. He was slightly wounded at Kimberley with the latter corps, of which he assumed command and brought out of action on the death of Major Scott Turner. He was given his Captaincy in the Northumberland Fusiliers in 1891 and awarded the D.S.O. He was in command of a battalion of the West Riding Regiment when he fell in action on June 20th, 1917.
