Information: Lieutenant Colonel George Eric Burroughs Dobbs was born in 1884 at Coolbawn House, Castlecomer, and educated at St. Stephen's Green Schools (Strangways) Dublin and at Shrewsbury. He passed from there direct to Woolwich, and was gazetted to the Royal Engineers on March 23rd, 1904. At the outbreak of war he went to France as First Lieutenant, and was awarded the Legion of Honour for his valuable work during the retreat from Mons, and later he was mentioned three timer in despatches. He became Captain before the end of 1914, and got his Brevet majority the following year. In 1916, on account at his excellent service, he was promoted to the position of Assistant Director of Signals with a corps, and became temporary Lieutenant Colonel in November. He was fatally wounded prospecting a new cable trench in the front line. He was a well known Rugby football player. He was the second surviving son of Mr and Mrs. Joseph Dobbs, the Chalet, Temple Road, Dublin.
