Information: Captain William Arthur Irvine Buchanan, A.V.C., who was killed in action on July 24th, 1917, was the son of Mr. J.G. Buchanan, manager, Northern Bank, Fintona, and grandson of the late Mr. Hugh Johnston, Cranyvale, Fintona. He was educated at Castletown Schools, Fintona, Omagh Academy and Esdale's College, Belfast, entering the Royal Veterinary College of Ireland in October, 1910. After a distinguished college career he qualified in July, 1914, gaining the medal for medicine. On the declaration of war he offered his services to the War Office, and was given a commission in the Special Reserve. He was mentioned in despatches by Lord French in June, 1915, and was given a commission in the Regular Army on July 14th, 1915.
