Information: Captain and Bt Major A/Lt.-Col. Alfred Durham Murphy D.S.O. M.C., Leinster Regiment, has been awarded the Distinguished Service Order for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. With great presence of mind he moved up troops to fill a gap he had discovered by means of a personal reconnaissance between his unit and the next division, afterwards handling his battalion with exceptional skill. He has been commanding a battalion of the Leinsters for the past year, and is probably one of the youngest Colonels in the British Army, being just in his 27th year. He was educated at Downside College and joined the Leinsters, through the Special Reserve, in 1911, and went to France in September, 1914. During his three years' continuous service with the B.E.F. he has been awarded the D.S.O. and M.C. and twice mentioned in despatches. He is the son of Lieut.Colonel E.W. Murphy, of Ballinamona, Cashel, Co. Tipperary, who saw 20 years' service with the Leinsters, but is now retired.
