Information: Second Lieutenant William Joseph Smith, Leinster Regiment, who was killed in action on July 31st, was the youngest son of the late Mr. John Smith, of Oak Park, Castleknock, and of Mrs. Smith, Kellystown, Clonsilla, Co. Dublin, and was educated at Belvedere College, Dublin. He joined the Inns of Court O.T.C. in February, 1916, previous to which he was for ten years in the office of the County Surveyor of the Dublin County Council, where he was very popular. He received his commission in February, 1917, and left for the front the following April. He had been through a severe engagement a short time previous to the one in which he lost his life.
