B.Ch., R.A.M.C., son of the late Professor Charles, M.D., D.Sc., F.R.S.E., etc., Queen's University, Cork, and of Mrs. Charles, Audley House, Swanage, was wounded on July 31st, and died after much suffering on October 6th. He was educated at Cork and Edinburgh, and took his medical degree in Edinburgh University. He joined the R.A.M.C. in 1914, and went to Flanders the same year. He was twice wounded, and mentioned in despatches. His colonel was killed beside him on the field. His chaplain wrote “He was doing magnificent work, dressing cases on the battlefield with absolute disregard for his own safety, under heavy fire, when a sniper shot him. We were all very fond of him in the battalion.” For his last act of gallantry he was awarded the M.C. He died before he had the pleasure of knowing that his gallantry had been rewarded.
