Information: Lieutenant Colonel Walter D. Smiles, R.N.V.R., has served with much distinction in the present war. He is one of the eight sons of Mr. H. Smiles, founder of the Belfast Rope Works Company, and grandson of Samuel Smiles, L.L.D., author of “Self-Help”. This officer was attached to the Armoured Car Force of the Royal Naval Air Service, and after serving in France, Belgium, and Persia, be accompanied the force to Rumania. His brilliant leadership of his squadron, and his personal gallantry won for him a great reputation amongst the Russians, who conferred on him the Cross of St. George. He has also been awarded the D.S.O.
